Aggressive Editing

The past few weeks I have been keenly aware that I am in need of some editing. My closet, my storage, my online life, my time- all of these things could use some streamlining. So that is going to be the theme of my next few months. I will go through everything I own- and eliminate anything I don't absolutely love. this is going to be quite a challenge- as I am a collector. I seem to hold on to things- as memories.

What do I want from this process?
I want less tying me down.
I want more freedom.
I would like to only own things I adore.
I would like a lighter existence.

Let's see how this goes.

keep an eye on: Xack Gibson

Xack Gibson happens to be both the brains and the brawn behind Bag Fry Productions- and this kid is going places. After several years of producing videos for Chicago's indie and rap scenes, Bag Fry has relocated to Los Angeles. Who knows what will happen next. I love working with Xack on projects because he is kind yet direct. You will always know what he is thinking and he is very honest. Those are the traits you want in a director. I adore this video he made for Verse. Also check out The Vicious Guns and Nightlife.

Street Fashion Photography

You should read Chealsea Fagan's hilarious take on fashion in "Street Fashion Photography is Messing with Me".

Here is an excerpt:

"I’m sorry, but a 50-year-old Asian man wearing a Paul Smith suit, a denim jacket, a mink stole, a Louis Vuitton backpack, Air Force Ones, and shutter shades — WHERE IS HE GOING? Does he work at an accounting firm run by Kanye West and a 10-year-old girl? Is he late for an appointment with Willy Wonka at the World Bank? Seriously, this man had one thing and one thing alone on his agenda that day: Stand awkwardly on the corner of the street, smoke a cigarette, and wait for people to come take his picture."

One to Watch: JohnPaul Morris

JohnPaul Morris makes amazing films. He has an eye for beauty and a dry wit that make his creations extremely enjoyable. Check out his blog for more of his work- and definitely watch the videos below. "Uno Night" might be my favorite short film of the year.

A Brief Obsession with Jane Birkin

British Vogue has just featured a great interview with Jane Birkin- a woman whose style was and remains effortless and iconic. The article was a great reminder of what it takes to pursue personal style and originality. Birkin famously wore whatever she wanted to- from a farm basket she carried with her to fancy parties and nightclubs- to her hair that she never seemed to bother with. She is the originator of effortless glamour. Jane Birkin is also a fantastic example of what it takes for an English native to get on in French culture. She was herself- she was confident- she broke the rules- and she sang in French. Voila! Her marriage to French vocal hero Serge Gainsbourg helped propel her from actress to national celebrity. Somehow she is currently fascinating me. Perhaps there will be more posts on her in the future.

The Art of Lennon Michalski

Lennon Michalski creates work that is offensive in all the right ways. He does not give the viewer what they want to see- and yet his work is gorgeous. I cannot even attempt to understand what is going though his head- or what has inspired such paintings- but I love them. His are the paintings you want to see from far away- cause they read like a Turner painting- dramatic and tumultuous. Up close you get all sorts of fun detail- Seuss-like imagery, and a texture that is stunning in its layered, resin-like complexity. Go ahead and check out his portfolio or purchase a piece before everyone catches on that this Kentucky kid has something great.
